[ESP02] El aprendizaje del español!

Essay 04 (Antes)

Career shift

How to make a career shift? I think this is one of the questions that I have been thinking a lot recently and in fact, it bothers me a lot and a mere thought of the uncertainty in future weigh me down.

Based on the rosy images painted by the media, the promising industries in the next 10 to 20 years are those related with information technology or research and development. Logistics, biopharmaceutics, cybersecurity, apps developing, vertical farming and programming are some fields that I can think of. Manual works are soon replaced by artificial intelligence and operators by robots. There will be lesser and lesser blue collar jobs in future. It is not a wise choice to continue staying on the same position if you cannot see the determination of the company that you are working in to digitalize its business and invest more in R&D and developing the capabilities of its employees.

I believe in many companies, impediment does exist when only a small group of considerably young people is tasked to spearhead the digitalization in a company. Many of the managers prefer the traditional ways of doing things and very usually unwittingly continue to manage in a way which is totally different from the new ways adopted in some of the biggest companies in the world. Also, with more competition from oversea companies due to open-market, some companies are struggling to survive with reducing revenue. No sufficient funding is invested into the digitalization even most of the decision makers in the companies are fully aware of the possible benefices and a dramatic reduction to the time and manpower squandered on doing something manually. For others, the talks on replacing manual works with the advanced technology sounds like gibberish and they just don’t agree that digitalization is a panacea to the performance of the company.

As an employee, nothing much we can do to affect the management’s decision and very often nowadays people give up a stable job and start a relatively low-paid job which serves as an entry point into the IT industry, thinking that using it as a stepping stone to gain experience and after a year or two they can move to the better positions in the same industry. However, no every one managed to do what they planned and some of them simply stuck at the entry job and found themselves impossible to move up the industry value chain. What would I do, if I am retrenched tomorrow? Perhaps I should have a backup plan and be well-prepared for whatever that might be coming. When grows older, the career selections become narrower and more difficult to start from zero.

02 [Eleven Minutes] by Paulo Coelho

A young lady – Maria, that has nothing to lose, flied from her home town in Brazil and started a new life in Geneva working as a prostitute. There is no quick way of earning money other than involving in some activities that a normal person would not take part. The book focus more on what she was facing during her stay in the foreign city and it is explained in details how she met the guy that finally became her husband. Since Maria was so far from her family and with intention to bring back home a sum of money to buy a farmland, even she struggled and questioned herself the purpose of coming to the city, she found herself working in a brothel earning the money that she could not possibly make in her home country. She didn’t have many friends and the colleagues in the club viewed her as a potential competitor. She learnt French in order to better adapt to the new life and also she went to library just to borrow some books to improve herself. The librarian became one of her friend even they didn’t speak to each other very much. She met a guy, a painter and also a frequent visitor to brothels, but she was unsure of his feeling towards her. Nothing happened between them until the last moment when Maria made up her mind to go back Brazil and bought herself an air ticket. The guy confessed and asked Maria to stay with him.

The title of the book 11 minutes, based on Maria, is the time taken to have sex with a client after deducting the time needed to undress, shower and put on clothes again. (It is short but Maria could make as much as 1000 franc from it). This is not my first Paulo Coelho’s book but definitely it is the first audiobook that I read. The storyline is interesting and I cannot guess what is going to happen next. The book offers a quick glance about the life of a prostitute in Geneva and how people struggled and made a big decision in certain stage of life. One of the interesting parts of the book is that there are some paragraphs about what has written by Maria in her diary that shows readers the actual feeling of  Maria.  I took about 1 week plus to finish up the book by spending about 35-50min every night. Apparently, the writer tried to write the book in the simplest words as possible as there aren’t many difficult vocabularies but there are some colloquial and useful expressions that I can use in daily life!

Agile

I knew nothing about Agile until I attended a talk recently. The first sight on the word - Agile gave me an impression that  it was something not related to the industry that I was working in. But, since I was eager to learn something new and that was why I signed up for the talk. Based on Wikipedia, Agile is considered a set of values and principles for software development under which requirements and solutions evolve through the collaborative effort of self-organizing cross-functional teams.
The speaker is with information technology background and has years of professional experiences working in a few International MNC. Currently he is working in banking industry and is the in-charge of the industry's digital transformation that is taking place now. Based on what he shared, the typical procedures used in everyday banking can be very tedious and troublesome. Many of the procedures are still manual and since banking is a highly regulated industry, lots of manpower involved in checking and counter-checking the input and output. For example, a client submit a form to change his home address, the bank may need to take at least a week to complete change. The application form is circulated from one department to another and it takes time and labor to make a small change. A digitalized banking service enables the banks to reduce the processing time and also cut down the manpower involved. However, there are so many things to improve and all changes simply cannot happen overnight.
Agile concept is adopted. Different sprint groups are created for different tasks and coaches who are familiar with the concept are sent to all groups to teach the concept and guide the team members. Usually a sprint group is made up of 6-7 developers with different skillset and also a business owner as a leader of the team. From the explanation given by the speaker, the concept is different from the traditional project management approach and it is very similar to the start-up approach that used in the IT industry. The questions for the people who attend the talk are whether or not this concept can be applied in the industry they are in and how all these changes can be carried out.
I feel that in this digital age, we must always try our best to learn some new skillsets in order to stay competitive. However, new skillsets are merely sufficient for our survivals. If we want to be a leader and stay ahead of other competitors, we must learn from others too how to improve the efficiency and shortening the problem-solving duration. It is quite hard to run a company using the management skill learnt from 80s or 90s. I believe a good leader can foresee the future trend and take advantages of it to build up the company.
A question is raised by an attendant about the factors that must be taken into consideration when a team member of agile team is selected, the speaker mentioned that he usually consider 3 factors – self learning, passion and possession of new skill set. Also, the ability to work with a team is necessary since teamwork is important in agile concept. Obviously, some soft skills are still necessary in securing a job! I really give my soft skill a big boost~
